Showing a customer how their solar system works after install

Introduction
Solar is unusual because the customer has bought a number. They did not want panels; they wanted a bill that goes down. If they cannot see that happening, the installation feels like a disappointment regardless of how well it was fitted.
Which means the handover carries more weight here than in almost any other trade. An install that produces exactly what was modelled will still generate complaints if nobody showed the owner where to look, and an owner who understands their system becomes the reference that sells the next three jobs on the street.
1. Showing a customer how their solar system works starts with the app
The monitoring is the product as far as the customer is concerned. It is the only part they interact with.
Install it and log in together
Do not leave a login on a card. Cards get lost within a week. Get the app on their phone, signed in, showing live generation before you leave the drive.
Explain what each number means
Generation, consumption, export, battery state. Four numbers, each in one plain sentence, and then let them look at it themselves.
2. Set expectations about output honestly
This is where trust is either built or quietly lost. Underpromise and let the system beat it.
Seasonal and daily variation
A December figure and a June figure are not comparable. Say what a good winter day looks like so the first dark week does not feel like a fault. Give both figures.
Weather, shading and orientation
Explain the dips they will see. A passing cloud halving the output for ten minutes is normal, and somebody watching an app for the first week will notice.
3. Explain how to actually save money
Owning the system is not the same as benefiting from it. The behaviour matters as much as the kit.
Shift the big loads into the day
Washing, dishwasher, immersion, car charging. This is the single biggest lever an owner has and most are never told. Suggest two specific habits.
How the tariff and export work
What they get paid for exporting, what it costs to import, and why using their own generation is worth more. Keep it to two sentences and a rough number.
4. Cover the hardware and safety
They need to know three things and usually none of them.
Isolators and how to shut it down
Show the AC and DC isolators physically. An electrician or a firefighter may need them and the owner should be able to point.
Inverter location, noise and warning lights
Say where it is, that it makes a faint noise, and what a warning light means. An unexplained light becomes a worried call.
5. Leave the paperwork and the maintenance picture
The administrative tail is long in this trade.
Certificates, registration and export application
Explain what you have submitted, what they must do, and what arrives separately. Export payments are missed constantly because a form was never returned.
Cleaning, servicing and what to expect over time
Panels mostly look after themselves; inverters do not last forever. Say plainly what wears out and roughly when, so it is not a surprise in year eight.
Conclusion
