Running a crowdfunding campaign for a cause needs a plan

Introduction

The page goes live, the organisation posts about it, and a few donations arrive. Then it stalls at a fraction of the target with three weeks remaining, and every subsequent post feels more desperate than the last.

Campaigns that work look different from the outside than they are on the inside. The early rush that appears spontaneous was arranged beforehand, and the people who gave in the first two days were asked privately before the page was published. Crowdfunding rewards preparation far more than it rewards the appeal itself.

1. Running a crowdfunding campaign for a cause depends on the first days

Momentum is the mechanism, and it is manufactured.

People give to campaigns that appear to be succeeding and avoid ones that appear to be failing. A page sitting at four per cent after a week deters the very supporters who would have given had it been at forty.

2. Line up the opening gifts before launching

The step that separates the campaigns that work.

Approach trustees, close supporters, staff and a handful of major donors in advance, and ask them to give on day one. Reaching a third of the target in the first forty-eight hours changes how everybody else responds.

3. Set a target you will actually reach

Ambition here is counterproductive.

A modest target met and exceeded outperforms a large one missed, both financially and in how the organisation is perceived afterwards. If the pledged gifts already cover a third, the target is roughly right.

4. Fund something specific

Crowdfunding is poorly suited to general appeals.

A vehicle, a room, a year of one service, equipment. Donors are buying a defined thing, and the specificity is what makes sharing it feel worthwhile to the people you are relying on to spread it.

5. Recruit the people who will share it

Reach comes from supporters, not from the organisation.

Identify a group beforehand and ask each of them personally to share at particular moments. Relying on your own channels alone limits the campaign to people who already know you.

6. Plan the whole run, not just the launch

Campaigns die in the middle.

Map out what gets posted in weeks two and three: an update, a story, a milestone, a matched-funding push, a final call. Deciding this in advance prevents the silence that usually follows a strong opening.

7. Use matched funding if you can arrange it

The most effective mid-campaign device.

A company or major donor agreeing to match gifts for a period creates a genuine reason to give now, and it revives a campaign that has flattened. Arrange it before launch and hold it for when momentum drops.

8. Keep the page simple and the video short

Production value matters less than clarity.

What you are raising for, why it matters, what the money buys, and how to give. A phone-recorded explanation from someone involved usually outperforms a polished film that took three weeks to produce.

9. Thank quickly and report afterwards

The campaign is also an acquisition exercise.

Many donors will be new to you, arriving through a friend. Thank them immediately, tell them what happened when the project is delivered, and bring them into your regular communications with proper consent.

Check the platform's fees and payout terms before choosing one, including what happens if you do not reach the target. Some release funds regardless and others return them, and that choice should be deliberate rather than discovered afterwards.

Conclusion

Arrange the opening momentum before the page goes live, because donors give to campaigns that look like they are succeeding.

Secure enough gifts in advance to cover the first third, set a target you will genuinely reach, raise for something specific rather than for general funds, recruit and brief the people who will share it, plan the middle weeks before you launch, hold matched funding in reserve for when momentum drops, keep the page and video simple and clear, and treat the new donors it brings as supporters to thank quickly and keep.
