Commissioning a new boiler with the householder present

Introduction


A boiler swap is one of the larger sums a household spends on something they will never look at again. The engineer commissions it, fills in the benchmark, and leaves. The householder now owns a control system they have never seen, a warranty they have not registered and a pressure gauge they do not understand.

Then October arrives, the heating behaves differently from the old system, and the call comes in. Most of those calls are about controls rather than combustion, and most of them are preventable in the fifteen minutes before the van leaves. That quarter of an hour pays for itself.


1. Commissioning a new boiler with the householder is part of the install


Treat the explanation as a task on the job sheet. Otherwise it gets squeezed out.


Do it with them, not to them


Let the householder press the buttons while you are standing there. Watching somebody else do it teaches nobody anything. Let them make the mistakes now.


Involve whoever actually uses the heating


The person who booked the job is not always the person who programs the timer. Ask who else should be there for five minutes. Two people remembering beats one.


2. Teach the controls properly


This is where nearly all the confusion lives. Very few callbacks are actually mechanical.


The programmer, thermostat and hot water


Show the difference between heating and hot water, how to set a schedule, and how to boost without changing the programme permanently. That one is worth repeating.


Smart controls and the app


If there is an app, install it and log in with them. An unpaired thermostat sitting in a box is a call in November. Test it before you leave.


3. Explain the gauges and the normal readings


Numbers without context cause alarm. A gauge nobody understands is a worry.


Pressure, and how to top it up


Show the filling loop, the normal cold reading and what to do if it drops. Also say that pressure rising when hot is expected. Show both readings if you can.


What the fault codes mean in practice


Give one or two common codes, what they usually indicate, and the simple reset. It saves both of you a journey. Write them on the job sheet.


4. Set out the maintenance and the warranty


The commercially important part is the part most often skipped.


Annual servicing and what the warranty requires


Say plainly that most warranties depend on an annual service and that missing one can invalidate cover. It is honest advice and it books next year's work.


Registration and paperwork


Register the appliance and the notification yourself where you can, and tell the customer what will arrive by post. Explain what the benchmark record is for.


5. Cover the things that go wrong in the first month


New systems behave differently from old ones.


Radiators, balancing and air


Say that a radiator may need bleeding as the system settles, and show them how. Explain that a system runs at different temperatures than the old one did.


Give one route for problems


A number, an email, an expected response time. A customer who knows how to reach you does not post about it instead.


Conclusion


Most first-winter boiler calls are about controls rather than combustion, so spend the last fifteen minutes on the handover and let the householder operate everything themselves while you are still there — including whoever actually programs the timer, not only whoever booked the job.

Teach the programmer, thermostat and hot water separately, pair any app before you leave, and explain the pressure gauge, the filling loop and one or two common fault codes with their resets. Say clearly that the warranty usually depends on an annual service, register the appliance, explain the benchmark record, show them how to bleed a radiator, and leave one clear route for problems.
