Accessibility and conversion improve together more often than not

Introduction
Accessibility is usually discussed as a compliance obligation and occasionally as an ethical one, and both framings are correct. What gets less attention is that the majority of accessibility failures on small business websites are also plain usability failures, and they cost enquiries from people who have no disability at all.
Text too small to read, contrast too low in sunlight, a form that cannot be completed with a keyboard, buttons too close together for a thumb, a video that autoplays over the content. Each excludes somebody who needs assistance and irritates a much larger group who do not. The overlap is where a small business should start, because the same work serves both purposes.
1. Accessibility and conversion overlap in the basics
The practical observation.
Contrast, text size, tap target size, keyboard operability, clear labels. These are accessibility requirements and they are also what makes a site usable on a phone in imperfect conditions. Fixing them serves both purposes with one piece of work, which is unusual.
2. Low contrast fails everybody outdoors
The most common single fault.
Pale grey text on white is a design preference that becomes unreadable in sunlight, on an older screen, or for anybody with reduced vision. Raising contrast costs nothing. It is also the fault most likely to have been introduced deliberately by a designer.
3. Small tap targets fail thumbs as well as tremors
The physical one.
Buttons and links too small or too close together produce mis-taps, and a mis-tap that clears a form ends the transaction. Generous spacing helps every user. This matters most on the checkout and enquiry steps, where the cost of an error is highest.
4. Unlabelled form fields fail more than screen readers
The form problem.
Placeholder text used instead of labels disappears as soon as somebody types, leaving them unsure what a field was for. This affects everybody and it is trivially fixable. It is also a common cause of the wrong information being entered in the wrong box.
5. Keyboard operability catches broken interfaces
The diagnostic value.
If a form cannot be completed with a keyboard alone, something is wrong structurally, and that structural problem usually causes other faults you have not identified. It takes two minutes to check and it is rarely checked at all.
6. Captions and transcripts get read by choice
The unexpected benefit.
Most people watching a video with captions are not deaf; they are in a quiet office or a noisy one. A transcript is also text that can be found and skimmed.
7. Clear language serves the widest group
The overlap nobody counts.
Plain wording, short sentences and explained terms help people with cognitive differences, people reading in a second language, and everybody in a hurry, which is most visitors.
8. Fix the interruptions
The shared irritant.
Autoplaying media, overlays that cannot be dismissed with a keyboard, and timed pop-ups are accessibility failures and conversion failures simultaneously.
9. Test with a keyboard and a phone in sunlight
The two cheapest checks.
Neither requires expertise. Complete your own enquiry form using only a keyboard, then read your own site outdoors. Both find real problems in about ten minutes.
Accessibility obligations are set by law in many jurisdictions and the requirements differ by country, sector and organisation size. The overlap described here is a practical starting point rather than a compliance programme, and where you have legal obligations they should be assessed properly.
Conclusion
Start with the failures that cost you both customers and access.
Raise contrast because low contrast fails everybody outdoors, make tap targets large and well separated, use real labels rather than placeholder text, confirm your forms work with a keyboard alone, add captions and transcripts which many people use by choice, write in plain language, remove autoplaying media and undismissable overlays, and run the keyboard and sunlight checks yourself.
